In free motion machine embroidery the sewing machine needle is used as a pencil or paint brush. She starts with a sketch on fabric and may use watercolour pencil, silk paints or dyes to produce the desired effect for the background. I am not only inspired by my surroundings, I am awestruck by nature’s transient characteristics and processes. There is beauty in how nature presents and transforms itself complete with its imperfections. I am preoccupied by the intuitive journey that paint takes me on, especially when I am working with layers that can be revealed through scratching back, rubbing away or lifting to bring back the history in previous layers. I do not replicate nature, I am inspired by nature's processes and improvisation. I open myself up to its influences. I am more likely to be awestruck but a detail in some forest fungi than from a panoramic vista while still anchored in nature. In his art, Roy strives to portray the beauty, grace, strength and vulnerability of the human form.
