Spring into Art Conference
Unfortunately, Spring Into Art 2020 had to be cancelled. 2021 is currently TBD.
WORKSHOP: Kathryn Spooner Bossy - CANCELLED until a later date.
3 day mosaic techniques workshop
Maximum of 12 participants
Cost: $275 which includes a $60 materials fee
In this hands-on mosaic workshop we will discuss historical and modern mosaic techniques, the importance of design, colour and texture.
Each participant will create 2 mosaics using a carefully curated selection of glass, ceramic, tile, beads and more. The goal is to free the mind and to let each participant enjoy the process from designing patterns to finishing their unique creations.....with lots of discussion and demonstrations in between.
No experience with glass is necessary. This workshop would suit seasoned creatives, those seeking inspiration for their own art practice OR those interested in trying something new.
We will be working with the adhesives Weldbond and E6000 and also tile grout. Masks and gloves will be provided. There is a lot of clipping using mosaic tools; people with carpal tunnel or arthritis issues would find this too difficult.
Kathryn will provide all materials and tools required for this 3 day workshop.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Kathryn will contact each participant before the workshop to discuss patterns, mosaic sizes and colour choices.
About the Artist
Influenced by surroundings at home and abroad, my work focuses largely on beauty and movement in nature. The electric colours of spring, the vibrancy of summer and autumn moving into the sparkling ice of winter create an endless pallet for creations in mosaic. Each piece may include stained glass, smalti, shells, mirror, china, stones, jewels, found objects, driftwood and handpainted papers.
Working as a graphic designer, living and travelling in Canada, England, Singapore and Australia I have been struck by the differences in light and colour. This has been
reflected in my work since I began using mixed media and teaching stained glass, mosaic and beading technique over 25 years ago. Living in the Ottawa Valley on a lake is a gift. I spend hours exploring and treasure hunting on our property and along the Ottawa River and now defunct railway, gathering pieces to use – the mystery of these finds become part of my mosaic story.

2020 Speakers
Reid McLachlan
Success in the arts. Can it happen? What does it look like? How do I achieve it? Is it a polyseme? So many questions. Like, what the heck is a polyseme any way? Artist Reid McLachlan has spent his career chasing this elusive chameleon we call success, with sporadic results. Come and hear his thoughts and ideas on the many meanings of success, and on a life spent surviving as a visual artist.
About the Artist
www.redcanoes.ca/reid
Chelsea, Quebec artist Reid McLachlan has always been driven to express himself visually. As a kid he was always drawing, and as a teenager he spent his last two years of high school studying drawing and painting full-time. His formal art-education culminated at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto where he spent his last year of study at their campus in Florence, Italy. He graduated with Honours and a number of awards in 1987 and has painted and exhibited continuously and prolifically since then. In his work he explores the universal themes that define what it is to be human: faith, love, loss and death - and he seeks understanding in these primal beliefs and emotions that drive us all.
Reid has had shows in Canada, the U.S. and in Italy, and his work can be found in public and private collections throughout North America. Locally he has had large solo exhibitions at many of the area's best public galleries including the City of Gatineau's Galerie Montcalm, Art-Image, L'Imagier and Casino Lac Leamy and at the City of Ottawa’s Karsh-Masson Gallery and Ottawa School of Art at the Shenkman Centre. He has also had many solo shows at private galleries in the Outaouais including Cube Gallery, Fritzi Gallery, La Petit Mort, Galerie McKenzie-Marcotte, Galerie Old Chelsea, La Fab, Alliance Française and Galerie Rodrigue Lemay and was part of the Artists in their Environment Studio Tour for 10 years. As well as a long list of group shows and projects too long to mention Reid has also collaborated with modern dance groups, created installations for Nuit Blanche Ottawa-Hull and participated in the TV show Star Portraits where he painted the portrait of Lt. Gen. Roméo Dallaire.
Although a dedicated artist Reid does take the summer off to follow his other passion, canoes. Every year he has spent four months building, repairing and paddling small watercraft. He is also a certified Paddle Canada instructor and has toured Europe, the UK and North America teaching canoeing with his wife Becky Mason.
His latest project is building a new 2 storey studio/canoe shop at his home in Chelsea that he started in September of 2019 and should be complete in March 2020. He can't wait to move in and start painting.

Karen Goetzinger
Changing Winds People often remark that the work of Karen Goetzinger has changed quite a lot since her textile based works. But has it really changed so drastically or is it simply a forward progression of her art practice? Karen will take us into her studio over the past few years to see just how the changes evolved and have brought her to the work she is doing now. In the end will we agree with Leonardo DaVinci who said, “Realize everything connects to everything else?” About the Artist Karen Goetzinger is a visual artist who resides in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fashion Design with an emphasis in Fine Arts from Mount Mary University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her work is exhibited by public and commercial galleries throughout North America, and has been shown in exhibition spaces in China and Australia. It hangs in both private and corporate collections internationally. Utilizing layers of mixed media, which often includes hand stitched thread, she expressively marks the imprint of time and place on individual memory. Each artwork is intentionally without figurative elements allowing the viewer to become the human element, in solitary interaction with the abstract landscape and their own personal narratives. Recent recognition for her work includes a 2016 and 2019 ARTicipate Endowment Fund grant and exhibition award at the Shenkman Arts Centre LaLande + Doyle Exhibition Space in Ottawa, Ontario,Canada, an invitation to participate in the 2017 Biennale internationale du lin de Portneuf in Quebec, as well as 2016 and 2019, grants from the Ontario Arts Council and from the Canada Council for the Arts in 2017. Karen has taught at the Ottawa School of Art and by invitation in Australia and New Zealand.
