Catherine Gutsche

Catherine Gutsche earned her BFA at York University 1980. She creates abstracted compositions on paper, wood panels and canvas alluding to forms in nature, sound and light, exploring colour, line, rhythm, and texture - driven by a need to engage the mind. Her art is abstract but rooted in real experiences - what she sees and how moments make her feel. She works without sketches, choosing instead to let memory and emotion guide the process. Each painting emerges as a dialogue with the canvas, where marks and colour build on one another to suggest a story without being literal. It is less about representation and more about capturing a sense of place and the feelings carried within it.
Her work is held in collections in Canada, Australia, England, France, and USA. Catherine has attended residencies at Artscape Gibraltar Point, Toronto; Pouch Cove Foundation Artist Residency, Newfoundland and was awarded a Denis Diderot Grant to attend the Chateau d’Orquevaux International Residency, France.
In 2013, four paintings by Catherine were purchased for the permanent collection for the Ottawa Public Library, Carp. In 2025, “The Colour of Conversation” was added to the permanent collection of the Diderot Gallery held by the Chateau d’Orquevaux.
