Marion Aitken

I describe my work as “high realism”. At a distance my work may look like a photo, but up closer, it is evident that the image is indeed painted, unlike “photo realism” that continues to look like a photograph regardless of how close the viewer is. Where possible I like to use my own photos as reference material (especially when my focus is the patterns, textures, and elements of nature). Otherwise I source ideal images and acquire permissions to use them as references, and tweak them digitally before using them as reference guides. Given my background as a graduate of Sheridan College’s Scientific and Technical Illustration program, it’s not surprising that I have a passion for detail and accuracy in my art. I love to use bright colours and powerful contrasts in my dramatic compositions. I hope that my work invites viewers to be immersed in a scene, inspired by intricacies that are often overlooked, and generally be refreshed as they consider the beauty that surrounds us.
